What Is the Livability Index? 

It seems everyone has their own version of a livability score. The American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) has one, and it's not just for retirees. Created with individuals and families of all ages in mind, the AARP version is based on a decade of research and includes every state in the nation.

Livability scores, as calculated by the AARP, are based upon seven main categories:

Across these categories, 40 different metrics are measured, including factors such as crime rates and job opportunities. Want to know whether the town you're considering has access to green spaces and libraries? It's in the livability index. Civic involvement and sense of community among residents are factors, as well. Towns are measured on a scale of 1 to 100, and the higher the score, the more livable the area. AARP's livability index is a prime tool for realtors, as well as the buyers and sellers they serve. Fort Lauderdale -- Score 53

Featuring all the luxury condos of Miami without the high rental and purchase prices, Fort Lauderdale has much to offer everyone who moves here, regardless of age. You'll be close to everything if you make the move to Fort Lauderdale, including beaches and green spaces. This area garnered whopping livability scores of 62 for neighborhood quality and 60 for accessibility to housing. 

Miami -- Score 52

Miami, Florida scored a high 68 in safe and easy transportation options and a second 68 in quality neighborhoods. Access to parks and jobs is readily available in Miami, and there's a bustling metro area that offers nearly everything a resident could want. Nightlife, medical centers and waterfront access are only a few of the amenities Miami has to offer those looking to relocate.
